Safeguarding is a shared responsibility, and we are committed to creating a safe, welcoming space for everyone—especially children, young people, and adults with care and support needs.

As part of the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Area Quaker Meeting, we follow the area’s Safeguarding Policy and Procedures. These are designed to:
Protect children and adults at risk from harm, abuse, or neglect.
Respond appropriately when concerns are raised—whether inside or outside our community.
Support volunteers and staff with training, guidance, and safeguarding checks.
Provide a safe space for everyone, with special attention to the most vulnerable.
We follow UK law, Quaker values, and best practice from safeguarding bodies such as 31:8 and Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM).
Children and young people are welcome at our Meetings and events. We ensure:
All volunteers who work with under-18s are DBS-checked.
Activities are supervised by at least two adults, with proper adult–child ratios.
Registers are kept for all children’s activities.
Parents and carers remain responsible for their children before and after sessions.
Any trip or off-site activity is properly risk assessed.
Adults who may be vulnerable due to health, disability, or personal circumstances are also protected by our policy. We ensure:
Respect for independence and privacy, while also offering appropriate support.
Safe recruitment and oversight of volunteers leading relevant activities.
Immediate reporting and action where abuse or neglect is suspected.
We recognise that people may share safeguarding concerns with us that relate to situations inside or outside of our Meeting.
If someone discloses abuse:
We listen carefully without judgement or pressing for details.
We do not promise to keep it secret—we explain that we may need to involve professionals to keep someone safe.
We record what was said and report immediately to a Safeguarding Friend or, if necessary, the police or local authority.
If someone is in immediate danger, always call 999.
We will support anyone who raises a concern and make sure appropriate follow-up happens through the correct channels.
Groups hiring space at the Meeting House are expected to:
Provide evidence of a current safeguarding policy and named contact.
Commit to our safeguarding expectations if they do not have their own policy.
Ensure that adults working with children or adults at risk have been DBS-checked.
Be aware that safeguarding concerns in the building must be reported to a Safeguarding Friend.
We include these requirements in our booking agreements to ensure consistency and care.
Our full safeguarding policy is available on request.
We also display safeguarding contact information inside the Meeting House.
